Viruses
The malicious computer program (virus) can copy itself
and infect a computer without permission or knowledge of the user.
Viruses can spread to other computers by infecting files on a network
file system or a file system that is accessed by another computer.
Each Virus has its own signature
or pattern.
This is a sort of a dirty fingerprint that can be used to identify the
malicious code. Antivirus programs keep a library of virus patterns and
use them to identify and avert the attack. If the antivirus program
finds a virus it usually suggests to quarantine, clean, or delete the
infected file.
Recovery
from a virus attack is usually unsafe without complete
formating and reinstalling of the software and operating system. If the
severity of the virus attack is low enough you can try a System Restore
which restores registry and some system files to a previous checkpoint
(Windows Me/XP/Vista). Some viruses, however, disable system restore
and other relevant software.
